JAWS - Southampton Review

Saturday night saw Birmingham dream pop rockers, Jaws, take to Southampton as part of their 2017 autumn tour. With support from Trash and Nelson Can, the night was bound to go down a massive success. Having not seen Jaws on their own headline tour since 2015, I was intrigued to see how they’d progressed since then.

Chesterfield lads Trash opened the night with a set packed full of energy, which perfectly set the tone for the rest of the night. They played a mix of old favourites like Hot Coffee, as well as slightly newer tunes. The quartet showed they know how to play together on a stage to a crowd that don’t particularly know who they are. But I’m sure with their summer feel good tracks; they converted a few more fans after this performance.

Next up was a trio I had never listened to before, Nelson Can. Dressed all in white, the three females truly showcased the stunning essence of girl power. Their presence on stage was so strong; everyone in the room firmly had their eyes fixed on one of the three. Their setup is somewhat an interesting one, a bassist, drummer and solo singer; a combination that works seamlessly. They showcased a mix of more chilled tunes, as well as ones that allowed people to have a good boogie to. The crowd became more shoulder to shoulder and the hype was building massively for the headline act.

The room erupted as soon as lead singer, Connor, stepped onto the stage. Walking out into a misty haze, everyone in the room was trying their best to catch a glimpse of the Brummies as they struck the first chord of the night. After having recently released an emotionally provoked video for 17, it was sure that this was included in the set list. The energy from the crowd was carried throughout the entire song despite not being as popular a track. My excitement grew when the opening chords of Toucan Surf began to play, having featured on very few of their set lists and being one of my personal favourite songs. Its inclusion just topped off an already perfect night. After a slight interlude, the boys joined the stage again for two last songs, finishing on the classic Gold. The room erupted as the beats bounced around the room. The crowd couldn’t get enough with chants of an encore long after the band left the stage.

Another class performance from a class band.
