A few weeks back, the infamous Purple Turtle housed Yonaka and Gurr for the Reading leg of their co-headline tour and as you'd expect from the delightfully pretentious 18+ social hub of Reading, there wasn't a lot of comradery until the drinks were heavily flowing (Georgina and I definitely got a big head start with the drinking). But I digress, the somewhat lack of rowdy crowd members had no affect on Yonaka's lead Theresa who engaged with those few of us rocking it out at the front in the same way she vibed with those nursing their drink at the back. Unfortunately, first came new single Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya and as the crowd were severely unprepared, the new fan favourite went down very under-appreciated. The more annoyingly drunk we got the more the older crowd perked up and by the time the set quickly rolled around to Ignorance everyone was having a grand old time. I find female vocals tend to be a hit or miss and Yonaka sure hit the mark and this isn't a band that relies on solely the vocals - every member is present, heard and interesting. My only criticism would be that it ended. I wanted to stay in their dark web for hours, but with plenty of new tracks looming and old favourite Run performed with some real conviction, I'm more than ready for this Brighton four piece to take over the world.
Yonaka's Set List: Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya
Salty
Run
Gods & Lovers
Drongo
Pride
All In My Head
Ignorance
Bubblegum
Gurr came next and I went in with few expectations. Having never seem them before and only a couple of quick listens on the day, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. They have a very distinct sound and their Berlin accents come hurtling through the out of date indie dream-pop. Every song could soundtrack a coming of age film but equally they make you feel like you're in one. Their sound was honest, happy-go-lucky and would have been an even bigger success had it been a 14+ venue. These guys are the epitome of Europe's youth and it was delightful to end up in a pit with the band in a loving group hug kind of way. I sincerely hope Gurr are back here for a full run of the festival season.
